Finding My Way Back to the Kitchen
I have been grieving the loss of my mum, who passed away suddenly in July 2026. For a while, I simply didn’t have the energy to create recipes or publish blog posts. It’s been three months, and I am slowly finding my way back to the kitchen.
If you knew my mum, you would know that food was at the centre of her life. She loved food, but even more than that, she loved cooking for people. She was happiest when there was a table filled with food and people she loved gathered around it.
Food was definitely her love language.
If she loved you, you would never leave her home hungry. It didn’t matter if you had only popped in for a quick visit. Somehow, she would find something to feed you. There was always a plate of something, a pot on the stove or something being prepared in the kitchen.
And if you told her you weren’t hungry, well… that didn’t really matter. She would feed you anyway.
I think that is one of the things I miss most about her. Not just the food itself, but the love that came with it.
My mum didn’t always say “I love you” in words. She showed it through food. She showed it by remembering what you liked, making an extra dish because she knew someone would enjoy it, and making sure everyone had eaten before she sat down herself.
Looking back, I realise how much of my own relationship with food came from her.
I learnt that food is not just about recipes and ingredients. It is about comfort. It is about bringing people together. It is about feeding someone when they are happy, when they are celebrating and sometimes when they are hurting.
Perhaps that is why getting back into my kitchen after losing her has taken some time.
There are recipes I can make without thinking, and then there are dishes that bring back memories I wasn’t quite prepared for. A smell, a spice or the sound of something sizzling in a pan, and suddenly I am back in my mum’s kitchen again.
I miss her terribly. But I also know that so much of her lives on in me. In the way I cook, the way I feed my family, the recipes I make and share, and in the simple belief that a good meal can make someone feel loved.

Why You’ll Love These Spicy Fully Loaded Fries
My teenage son is home for the school holidays, which means I have a hungry teenager to feed for what feels like a very long two weeks! Trying to get a teenager to eat vegetables for an entire month is a mission in itself. 😂
These Spicy Fully Loaded Fries were the perfect solution when those hunger pangs hit.
They are quick, easy and full of flavour. You don’t need any special cooking skills or complicated ingredients to make them. I used store-bought frozen steakhouse chips, which saved me the trouble of peeling and cutting potatoes.
If you prefer making your chips from scratch, you might also enjoy my South African Slap Chips recipe. They are a classic comfort food and a delicious alternative when you have a little more time in the kitchen.
Simply pop the frozen chips into the air fryer for around 13 minutes, prepare the spicy marinade and mix up a dipping sauce. Before you know it, you have a generous portion of spicy fully loaded fries ready to serve.

How to Make Spicy Fully Loaded Fries
The beauty of this recipe is how little effort it takes. You can use frozen steakhouse chips, which makes preparing these spicy loaded fries even easier.
1. Cook the chips. Place the frozen steakhouse chips in your air fryer and cook for approximately 13 minutes, or until golden and crispy. You can also bake the chips in the oven, following the cooking instructions on the packet. Cooking times may vary depending on your air fryer and the type of chips you use. The USDA’s air fryer safety guide also offers helpful advice on cooking food safely and avoiding overcrowding the basket.
2. Prepare the spicy marinade. While the chips cook, mix the ingredients for the spicy marinade according to the recipe below.
3. Make the dipping sauce. Prepare the dipping sauce while everything else comes together. It adds another layer of flavour and makes these fully loaded fries even more satisfying.
4. Assemble and serve. Toss or top the cooked chips with the spicy mixture as directed in the recipe, serve with your dipping sauce, and enjoy while the fries are hot.
For the best results, aim for golden, crispy chips rather than letting them become too dark. The FDA’s guidance on acrylamide and food preparation explains why cooking potato products to a golden yellow colour rather than a dark brown colour is recommended.

That’s all there is to it! These Spicy Fully Loaded Fries are perfect for a weekend treat, a casual lunch, a movie-night snack or those days when everyone seems to be hungry at the same time.
